The Symphony of Rain: Exploring Sound and Materials
Have you ever stopped to really listen to the rain?
Does rain sound the same when it falls on different objects?
Let's find out!
Place several different objects—such as metal cans, plastic containers, glass cups, hollow toys, or wooden blocks—in a safe location outdoors, such as a balcony or yard.
Listen carefully as the raindrops fall.
Do they all sound the same?
Different materials and shapes can produce different sounds because of the way sound travels and resonates through them. Children can compare the sounds and even arrange them into their own rainy-day percussion symphony!

★ Tip: You don't need to use only containers. Try objects made from different materials or with different structures. A hollow plastic toy and a solid wooden block, for example, can produce surprisingly different sounds.
Rainfall Measurement: Math in the Real World
Rain isn't just something we can hear—we can measure it, too!
If you have a measuring cup or another transparent container with measurement markings, place it outside during the rain.
Record the water level after one hour. Then, if the rainfall remains relatively consistent, you can use the measurement to make a simple estimate of the total rainfall.
For example, if the water level increases by 5 mm in one hour and the rain continues for three hours, you can estimate the total rainfall at about:
5 mm × 3 =15 mm of rainfall

Record the rainfall over several days and turn your results into a simple line graph. Children can observe how rainfall changes over time and compare different rainy days.
Through this activity, abstract mathematical concepts such as measurement, multiplication, units, and data visualization become connected to something children can see and experience in everyday life.

★ Tip: Don't have a measuring cup? Use a fixed container and place a ruler vertically inside it to measure the water level.
Become a Rainfall Detective: Exploring Measurement Errors
But wait—is your measurement accurate?
Try comparing your results with official weather data. You may find that your measurement is different from the reported rainfall.
Why might that happen?
Ask your child to become a rainfall detective and investigate possible explanations.
For example:
- Was the container placed under an eave?
- Was it affected by wind?
- Was the opening too small or too large?
- Did some water splash out?
- Could some water have evaporated?
- Was there an error when reading the measurement?
These questions introduce children to an important part of science:
Measurements are not always perfect.
Scientists need to think carefully about how experiments are designed, how data is collected, and what factors might affect the results.

★ Tip: Want to investigate further? Place several containers with different heights and widths in the same area during the next rainy day. Compare the amount of water collected and discuss whether the size or shape of the container affects the result.
