Section B (Elementary Math for 1st Grade, Year 2, 6-7 Years Old)

Transitioning from the concrete, hands-on learning experiences of preschool to the abstract world of numerical operations in section b is an important milestone in every child's mathematical journey. As children move from manipulating physical objects to understanding symbolic representations, they begin developing deeper mathematical thinking and reasoning skills.

The SunStart Section B Mathematics Program builds upon the strong foundation established during the preschool years through a spiral learning approach. By revisiting key concepts with increasing depth and complexity, children strengthen their logical reasoning, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities while learning to think beyond routine methods and approach challenges with confidence.

1. Strengthening Language Comprehension for Mathematical Problem-Solving 

As mathematical problems become more language-based, understanding the question becomes just as important as finding the answer. Children learn to identify key words, recognize important information, organize given conditions, and develop the reading comprehension skills needed to solve application and word problems with confidence.

2. Developing Flexible Strategies Through Problem-Solving Activities 

Through a wide variety of carefully designed problem-solving activities, children learn to examine mathematical challenges from different perspectives rather than relying on memorized procedures or a single fixed method. They are encouraged to: 

  • Observe mathematical patterns and relationships.

  • Identify an effective starting point for each problem.

  • Compare, evaluate, and adjust different problem-solving strategies.

  • Explain their reasoning and summarize effective solution methods.

This process nurtures logical reasoning, independent thinking, and the confidence to solve unfamiliar problems.
