Section C (Elementary Math for 2nd Grade, Year 3, 7-8 Years OId)

After building a strong foundation in number sense and basic mathematical thinking during section B, children are ready to take the next step toward deeper reasoning and real-world problem solving. At this stage, mathematics extends beyond computation to include reading comprehension, logical analysis, and multi-step reasoning. Children learn not only to find answers, but also to understand how and why those answers are reached.

The SunStart Section C Mathematics Program uses a spiral learning approach to deepen children's understanding of numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, and problem-solving skills through a wide variety of carefully designed activities. By combining engaging mathematical tasks, hands-on materials, and meaningful real-life contexts, children learn to observe, analyze, organize information, and draw logical conclusions while developing confidence as independent thinkers.

Parents continue to play an important role throughout this learning journey. By listening patiently, encouraging thoughtful discussion, and allowing children the time to explore their own ideas, families help build resilience, confidence, and a positive attitude toward learning. Every attempt, every reflection, and every discovery becomes a valuable step in a child's growth.

Learning Focus

1. Encouraging Independent Thinking Through Problem-Solving Activities 

Children take an active role in their own learning while teachers serve as guides and facilitators rather than simply providing answers . Through purposeful questioning and discussion, students learn to identify problems, test ideas, revise their thinking, and develop effective solutions independently.

2. Strengthening Numerical Reasoning and Mathematical Language Comprehension 

As elementary math tasks become more complex, children need to develop both numerical reasoning and mathematical language comprehension. Through real-life application problems, logical reasoning activities, and multi-step problem-solving tasks, they learn to interpret information, identify relevant details, organize their ideas, analyze relationships, and work toward solutions systematically. 

3. Developing Flexible and Critical Thinking Strategies

Rather than relying on memorized procedures or one fixed solution method, children are encouraged to explore multiple approaches to mathematical problems.
