Section A (Kindergarten, Reception Math , 5-6 Years Old)

Building a Strong Math Foundation Through Play and Hands-On Learning

The preschool years are a critical stage for developing number sense and mathematical thinking. At SunStart, children learn through guided interaction, hands-on activities, and meaningful conversations with parents and teachers. Rather than memorizing procedures or answers, they develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through exploration, discovery, and play building confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

As children progress from preschool's concrete, hands-on experiences to the semi-concrete stage of concept retention, they gradually develop the ability to think more abstractly. This strong foundation prepares them for the transition into section A, where mathematical learning expands beyond simple calculations to include logical reasoning, language comprehension, and independent problem-solving.

Using a spiral learning approach, the SunStart Mathematics Program revisits key concepts with increasing depth and complexity, allowing children to strengthen their understanding step by step while developing the confidence to tackle new challenges.

Learning Focus

1. Learning Through Meaningful Parent–Child Interaction

At SunStart, meaningful learning begins with interaction. Through guided instruction, engaging discussions, hands-on materials, and thoughtful reflection, children actively construct their mathematical understanding rather than simply receiving information. Our carefully designed home practice activities extend classroom learning, encouraging parents and children to explore, communicate, and solve problems together while strengthening both mathematical confidence and positive family relationships.

2. Developing Number Sense, Logical Thinking, and Problem-Solving Skills

Early experiences with counting, comparing, and simple addition and subtraction provide much more than computational skills. Through playful exploration and meaningful mathematical activities, children develop number sense, logical reasoning, observation, analysis, and problem-solving abilities. These are some of the most important benefits of early math enrichment. By encouraging flexible thinking rather than memorization, SunStart helps children approach new challenges with confidence, curiosity, creativity, and growing independence.
