Section E (Elementary Math for 4th Grade, Year 5, 9-10 Years Old)

Developing Creative and Advanced Mathematical Thinking 

At SunStart, mathematics is more than mastering computational skills—it is about applying mathematical thinking to everyday life. From preschool through section B, children develop strong foundations through hands-on learning experiences that nurture the essential habits of careful observation, identifying problems, reflecting and refining ideas, and finding effective solutions. By section D, these habits become the foundation for tackling increasingly abstract mathematical concepts with confidence.

The SunStart Section E Mathematics Program extends the application skills introduced in section C while guiding children toward more advanced mathematical reasoning. Through comprehensive problem sets and diverse real-world applications—including visual models, working backward, average problems, rate and speed, factors and multiples, statistics, permutations and combinations, and set relationships—students strengthen their analytical thinking and develop flexible problem-solving strategies.

A key feature of the section D curriculum is the introduction of the balance scale model, which provides a concrete representation of equality. This visual and hands-on approach helps children build a solid conceptual understanding of equations and prepares them for future algebraic thinking by bridging concrete experiences with increasingly abstract mathematical concepts.

Learning Focus

1. Strengthening Visual and Analytical Problem-Solving Skills

Children continue to develop their ability to interpret, compare, and create visual mathematical models. They learn to analyze diagrams accurately, identify the relationships represented in each model, and translate visual information into appropriate equations. These skills help students organize complex information and solve multi-step mathematical problems more systematically. 

2. Applying Visual Models to Diverse Real-World Math Problems 

Students are guided to use visual representations as flexible thinking tools rather than fixed procedures. By applying diagram-based strategies to a variety of mathematical situations, they learn to overcome common problem-solving obstacles and approach unfamiliar questions with confidence.

3. Developing Higher-Order Mathematical and Critical Thinking 

Building on the abstract concepts introduced in earlier grades, children apply logical reasoning to increasingly sophisticated mathematical situations. Through advanced math enrichment activities, they analyze relationships, connect different concepts, recognize underlying structures, and consider how individual calculations contribute to a complete solution. This process develops systematic thinking and helps students approach complex problems from a broader perspective. 

4. Building Algebraic Thinking Through the Balance Model

Using the familiar concept of a balance scale, children develop a concrete understanding of mathematical equality. Through hands-on exploration, they learn how adding or removing equal quantities affects both sides of an equation, providing a natural transition to algebraic reasoning and symbolic mathematics.

Preparing Children for Advanced Mathematical Learning and Algebraic Reasoning 

The SunStart section E Mathematics Program helps children move confidently from concrete reasoning toward abstract mathematical thinking. By combining visual models, logical reasoning, real-world applications, and early algebraic concepts, students develop the analytical skills, flexibility, and confidence needed for future mathematical success while learning to view mathematics as a meaningful tool for understanding the world around them.
